Alpha Jallow has a tailoring
workshop in Bakau where he and his
team make a large number of the
clothes that Goodies sells in the UK.
Originally from Guinea-Conakry, Alpha
moved to the Gambia in 1990
with his family. He now lives in his
own compound with his family of 4
boys. Also living there are two of
his brothers and their families.
There are now almost enough boys in
the compound for a football team!
At his workshop in Bakau, Alpha does a
wide range of work, from uniforms for security
guards to new traditional outfits for religious
holidays. He has a team of tailors and apprentices.
He will often persuade
an old tailoring friend to come
in and help make the garments
for Goodies each year.
Bedcovers that
have just had
their final
treatment.
Salam Batik is run by Amadou Jallow and Sheikh Tijan Secka and is based near London Corner in Serrakunda. They are experts in batik design and dyeing, employing local tailors to make up the garments. They supply us with hoodies, Zeb tops, T shirts and bedcovers.
Bakau Craft Market is one of our favourite places to shop for the business - alive with interesting characters, some of whom have become good friends and help us source many of the things we sell.
Bubacarr Camara was born into an artist family in 1960 in the Republic of Guinea. He migrated to Freetown, Sierra Leone where he was taught tie and dye and Batik work. He is single but has adopted the six children of his elder brother who died with his wife during the civil war in Sierra Leone.
